Beacon Lumber Co. shuttered its lumber yard and will auction off its products and equipment, the South Coast Today Web site reported.New Bedford, Mass.-based Beacon Lumber, which also runs a hardware and paint retail operation, laid off about 70 workers in May, treasurer and co-owner Barry Brodeur told the newspaper. The move shifts the company’s focus to its retail operation.
The decision to close was based in part on the faltering economy, Brodeur said, compounded by outstanding debts from some customers, employee attrition and increased competition.
“It just became apparent we were better off shifting gears and going in another direction,” he said. “It's a shock to us that our lives have changed drastically.”
