The Timken Co. is spending $14 million on a new thermal treatment facility at its steel plant in Canton, Ohio, aimed at boosting the plants capacity to produce heat-treated steel bars and tubes. The 34,000-square-foot facility, expected to open in December, is designed to increase production to 45,000 annually by mid-2009. The bars and tubes made there are primarily sold to the oil and gas industry for use in harsh environments.
“This investment is the latest step forward in Timken’s strategy to drive growth in the global energy and industrial end markets,” vice president of sales Bob Keeler said. “The added capacity allows us to better meet strong demand for steel in energy and industrial market sectors that require precise mechanical properties for the most demanding steel applications.”
It’s the latest investment for the Canton, Ohio-based bearings manufacturer, which last year spent $5 million on a new induction heat treating line at the Canton plant. Timken has also said it will invest $60 million in its Canton steel rolling mill operations.
